Unit One – Basic Anatomy and Physiology

The Skeletal System

Muscles of the Human Body

Muscles form the flesh of the body. They give shape (curves) to the body and most importantly, perform the function of movement. Muscles make up approximately fifty percent of our body weight.

The Nervous System

The nervous system is concerned with the integration and control of all bodily functions. It makes it possible for us to be aware of our environment and to respond to changes within that environment.

The Endocrine System

Endocrine glands are ductless glands, so called because the secretions they make do not leave the glands through ducts, but pass directly into the blood circulating through the substance of the glands.

Unit Two – The Functions of Cells, Tissues, and the Skin

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

Function of the Cell

  • The absorption of nourishment.
  • Growth and repair.
  • Reproduction by division.

The Tissues

Cells packed or grouped together form tissue. There are several different types or shapes of cells forming tissues depending on the function of that part of the body, e.g. compact tissue of the bones causing them to be hard, therefore supporting the body.

  4. Nervous tissue

The Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the body and has many functions. We are most aware of it as it covers every inch of the body. It is the component of the body which is most exposed to injury. Daily we tend to bring minor trauma to our skin. Our skin is taken for granted. In fact, it is a very complex organ whose correct functioning is essential to life.

The Dermis

The dermis is attached to the epidermis by projections from the dermis called papillae. The dermis is the inner layer which consists of fibrous and connective tissue.

Sweat Glands

The main part of the sweat gland is situated in the dermis. The duct, however, spirals towards the surface through the epidermis. The gland is made up of a tightly convoluted tube which is lined by cubical epithelium and surrounded by a network of capillaries.

Nails

Nails are modifications of the epidermis, and are horny plates corresponding to the claws or hooves of animals. Nails are developed from the stratum lucidum of the nail bed, and composed of densely packed keratinized cells.

HAIR

Most parts of the skin are covered by hair either course or downy. No hair is found on the palms of the hand or soles of the feet. The roots of the hairs are found in the dermis.

Unit Three – The Healthy Body

This course has been formulated for and about women, and deals with two aspects of a woman’s life that are essentially interlinked:

All students will obviously appreciate that the transition from girl to young woman and from young woman to mature woman takes time and, as in everything else, the processes will be shorter, longer, easier or more complicated depending on a number of factors.

The most important of these include:

  1. Genetic inheritance.
  2. The Environment in which a woman grows up and lives.

The course assignments will describe the essentials for basic healthy living:

  • Food
  • Exercise
  • Hygiene

And through to more elaborate programs aimed at developing and maintaining a woman’s body at a high level of fitness. The course content will:

  1. Explain how the woman’s body works.
  2. Include numerous ways of catering for, cosseting and beautifying it.
  3. Devote space to discussing and suggesting ways that women can use to cope with the many problems that they may have to face in their lives, from alcoholism to warts.

Unit Four – Personal Hygiene

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Outline the various bath additives
  • Understand the difference between eccrine and apocrine sweat glands

Neither sweat nor sebum smells unpleasant in itself; to the contrary, the vague salty odor on the skin can often be found to be both healthy and attractive. The body odors that people do find objectionable manifest themselves when air is unable to circulate freely over the skin because of clothes, and so moisture cannot evaporate.

Special Bath Treatments. Depending on what you put into the water, a bath can be:

  • Nourishing
  • Stimulating
  • Toning
  • Soothing
  • Relaxing

Application of Body Scrubs. These should be used for:

  • Gooseflesh
  • Blackheads
  • Skin that needs revitalizing

Chest and Back Spots

This complaint is common for the more 'greasy-skinned' women as well as for adolescents. The areas should be kept clean by regular washing and scrubbing (if not too blemished and tender), with a bath brush, a loofah, a bath mitt, or by using a special abrasive sponge and medicated soap.

Body Odor

It is a fact that everybody sweats. However, there is no need for a woman to smell unless she is careless or just plain uncaring about herself. Sweat only becomes smelly in the areas of the body where fresh air does not circulate easily.

Unit Five – Skin Consultation and Care

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Identify the actions that are detrimental to the appearance of skin
  • Describe the different skin types
  • Identify which products should be used for the different skin types

The skin takes care of itself to a certain extent, producing its own oils and moisture for lubrication. But the sebaceous glands that do this do not always function correctly. They may produce too much sebum (oil) or too little.

Different skin types:

  4. Balanced Skin

Any of the brand names available in the large stores and pharmacists are safe to use, though if you or your clients have a sensitive skin or have suffered from allergies, it is probably wiser to go for the ranges of hypo-allergenic products.

Unit Six – Skin Care

A woman's skin is changing, sloughing-off dead cells and growing new ones, all the time. There is no sense in you or your client wasting money on skin-care products unless they are going to be used regularly. Any beauty therapist should be able to tell at a glance the difference between a cared-for skin and one which has been subjected regularly to the 'hit and miss treatment.’

Unit 7 – Manicure and Pedicure

Despite all, women expect their hands and feet to not only work efficiently but also to look good. This is an area in which a beauty therapist’s knowledge and skills often prove to be invaluable to the client. Beautiful hands are a tremendous advantage. Students and clients with fairly unremarkable faces and figures can have hands that are hypnotically attractive to watch.

Hand Protection

It is not so many years ago that hands were seen as being able to reveal a woman’s social status. A 'lady’s' hands were always soft and white, showing that she did no manual work, and to keep them this way hand care was taken very seriously.

Hand Cleaning

Strange as it may seem, it is possible to forget for days on end actually to clean the hands. They may be washed at odd moments during the day, but this is not the same thing. Often women are so busy cleaning their face, teeth and so on that their hands are left out of the process.

Hand Nourishing

Last thing at night, after having applied the moisturizer or night cream, massage in some hand cream. This should not take long; simply smooth on to the fronts and the backs of the hands, and massage each finger quickly. Always remember to bend the fingers backwards with the other hand and pull each finger gently to keep the joints flexible.

Hand Massage

Following a manicure, and also at night once in a while, it should be ensured that the hands are given a good massage. The following are a set of guidelines that the student would do well to acquaint him or herself with.

Hand Beauty Treatment

Students can give their own, or a client’s hands, a mask to improve the color and texture of the skin, just as they would do with the face. If a commercial brand is to be used, then a nourishing one should always be selected rather than a drying one.

Hand Exercises

Exercising will stimulate the circulation of blood to the hands and encourage nail growth, and will keep the hands supple and flexible. As well as recommending that the fingers are pressed back at night as previously suggested, students can also advocate that hand exercises should be incorporated into a regular exercise regime.

The Nails

The nail plate consists of layers of a hard enamel-like substance, Keratin, which are held together by a small amount of moisture and fats and it takes from 3 to 5 months depending on the individual, for the nail to grow.

Bearing this in mind, it is important for the student to remember that it will also take this length of time for any damage done to the nail while it is being formed in the matrix to grow out, or for students/clients to see any improvement if the nails are being improved using cuticle cream.

The Feet

The majority of problems with the feet will be of the client’s own making, as we said earlier. They are caused by total neglect of the feet, or worse, by squashing the feet, which are highly complex systems of bone and muscle, into too-tight shoes or balancing them on tiny heels. Nowadays, thank heavens, the 'winkle pickers' and high stiletto heels that were once 'de rigeur' have gone the way of many fashion fads. It is not difficult nowadays to find shoes that combine elegance and style with comfort.

Unit Eight – Hair Care

Hair, like nails, is an appendage of the skin and similar in composition to the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. The point from which all hair is nourished and produced is the papilla, situated at the base of the follicle, a tube or pocket of skin, from which the hair emerges.

Growth of Hair

Hair is the most rapidly developing cellular structure in the entire body, with the possible exception of bone marrow. It grows on average about half an inch (1.25 cm) a month, faster in summer than in winter and more at night than in the daytime. Length is determined by the growing cycle. The growing phase, anagen, can last up to six years. Followed by the degenerating phase, catagen, when the hair follicle stops growing and then shrinks.

The main causes of dry and straw like hair are seen as being either natural wear and tear or mechanical damage, and chemical damage.

Let us first give consideration to the actual shape of the face itself, before we even think about making learning how to apply make-up.

Face Shaping

Most students will already appreciate that apart from undergoing plastic surgery, there is relatively little that a woman (or a beauty therapist, for that matter) can do to alter the basic shape and structure of her face and her features.

Initially, then, let us begin by discussing how it is possible to correct the mouth and the lips. In doing so we shall be looking at the problems and correction of the following:

The General Adaptation Syndrome

Adaptation and Homeostasis form the basic principles of our learning experience whether it is intellectual learning or learning what foods and exercise and hobbies are "good for us". Things we like and make us feel good we tend to repeat, things that are not pleasant we tend to avoid. But where we are unable to assess the inner workings of our body, we are not always that accurate in assessing the benefit of what we do and what we pour into our gullet.

The Essential Nutrients

Your body is composed of molecules made from the food you consume. Your digestive tract produces about 10 liters of enzyme secretions every day to digest part of the 100 tons of food you are likely to consume over your lifetime.

Vitamins

Vitamins are organic nutrients found in foods and are essential in small quantities for both growth and good health. Chemically vitamins are made from of the same elements: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and sometimes nitrogen or cobalt, but their elements are arranged differently and so perform different functions in the body.

Unit 11 – Basic Nutrition

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Identify the importance of mineral and the various foods they can be found in
  • Explain the importance of water to the body
  • Discuss the deficiency of indications of minerals in the diet

Minerals

If we extracted all the minerals out of a human body, they would weigh about 4 or 5 pounds (9 - 11kg). While we need only small amounts of minerals in our diet, they perform critical functions: building of bones and teeth, regulating heartbeat, transporting oxygen from the lungs to tissues, etc.

Micro Minerals

Notes on these will be found right at the end of the course when looking at the RDA's. As the measuring devices used by scientists become more sensitive so will the knowledge on the micronutrients expand. Micro-minerals, which are only just being accepted as essential, e.g. Boron, will be further studied and reported on.

WATER

Without food we can live for weeks. But without water, depending on the temperature, we only would last a few days. Nothing survives without water, and virtually nothing takes place in the body without water playing a vital role.

Unit Twelve- Anti-aging Therapy

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Explain the cross-linking theory of ageing
  • Describe the effect of free radicals
  • Understand the effect of antioxidants
  • Explain how diet can affect the process of ageing

Unit Thirteen – Massage

Principles of massage:

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body using the hands. It is one of the oldest forms of healing known to man. In its simplest form, it is instinctive to all of us to rub the part of the body that is hurting. 'Rubbing it better'.

Unit Fourteen – Sterilization

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

Autoclave

This is the most effective method of sterilization and what is done is that instruments are sterilized at high pressure in an autoclave. A good example of this would be a pressure cooker.

Ultraviolet Rays

These types of rays also sterilize but unfortunately have a very low rate of penetration. The ultraviolet rays are emitted in a cabinet which may be wall mounted or kept on a surface.

Glass Bead Sterilizers

Glass bead sterilizers reach temperature of between one hundred and ninety degrees and three hundred degrees, depending on the model.

Chemical Methods of Sterilization

Concentrated liquid chemical agents are available which have to be diluted for use. Some chemical agents act either as a disinfectant or as a sterilant, depending on the strength of their solution and the time for which items are kept in contact with Some liquid chemical sterilizers are very harmful to the skin and great care is needed when handling them.

Unit One – Basic Anatomy and Physiology

The Skeletal System

Muscles of the Human Body

Muscles form the flesh of the body. They give shape (curves) to the body and most importantly, perform the function of movement. Muscles make up approximately fifty percent of our body weight.

The Nervous System

The nervous system is concerned with the integration and control of all bodily functions. It makes it possible for us to be aware of our environment and to respond to changes within that environment.

The Endocrine System

Endocrine glands are ductless glands, so called because the secretions they make do not leave the glands through ducts, but pass directly into the blood circulating through the substance of the glands.

Unit Two – The Functions of Cells, Tissues, and the Skin

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

Function of the Cell

  • The absorption of nourishment.
  • Growth and repair.
  • Reproduction by division.
  • The excretion of waste products.

The Tissues

Cells packed or grouped together form tissue. There are several different types or shapes of cells forming tissues depending on the function of that part of the body, e.g. compact tissue of the bones causing them to be hard, therefore supporting the body.

  4. Nervous tissue

The Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the body and has many functions. We are most aware of it as it covers every inch of the body. It is the component of the body which is most exposed to injury. Daily we tend to bring minor trauma to our skin. Our skin is taken for granted. In fact, it is a very complex organ whose correct functioning is essential to life.

The Dermis

The dermis is attached to the epidermis by projections from the dermis called papillae. The dermis is the inner layer which consists of fibrous and connective tissue.

Sweat Glands

The main part of the sweat gland is situated in the dermis. The duct, however, spirals towards the surface through the epidermis. The gland is made up of a tightly convoluted tube which is lined by cubical epithelium and surrounded by a network of capillaries.

Nails

Nails are modifications of the epidermis, and are horny plates corresponding to the claws or hooves of animals. Nails are developed from the stratum lucidum of the nail bed, and composed of densely packed keratinized cells.

HAIR

Most parts of the skin are covered by hair either course or downy. No hair is found on the palms of the hand or soles of the feet. The roots of the hairs are found in the dermis.

Unit Three – The Healthy Body

This course has been formulated for and about women, and deals with two aspects of a woman’s life that are essentially interlinked:

All students will obviously appreciate that the transition from girl to young woman and from young woman to mature woman takes time and, as in everything else, the processes will be shorter, longer, easier or more complicated depending on a number of factors.

The most important of these include:

  1. Genetic inheritance.
  2. The Environment in which a woman grows up and lives.

The course assignments will describe the essentials for basic healthy living:

  • Food
  • Exercise
  • Hygiene

And through to more elaborate programs aimed at developing and maintaining a woman’s body at a high level of fitness. The course content will:

  1. Explain how the woman’s body works.
  2. Include numerous ways of catering for, cosseting and beautifying it.
  3. Devote space to discussing and suggesting ways that women can use to cope with the many problems that they may have to face in their lives, from alcoholism to warts.

Unit Four – Personal Hygiene

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Outline the various bath additives
  • Understand the difference between eccrine and apocrine sweat glands

Neither sweat nor sebum smells unpleasant in itself; to the contrary, the vague salty odor on the skin can often be found to be both healthy and attractive. The body odors that people do find objectionable manifest themselves when air is unable to circulate freely over the skin because of clothes, and so moisture cannot evaporate.

Special Bath Treatments. Depending on what you put into the water, a bath can be:

  • Nourishing
  • Stimulating
  • Toning
  • Soothing
  • Relaxing

Application of Body Scrubs. These should be used for:

  • Gooseflesh
  • Blackheads
  • Skin that needs revitalizing

Chest and Back Spots

This complaint is common for the more 'greasy-skinned' women as well as for adolescents. The areas should be kept clean by regular washing and scrubbing (if not too blemished and tender), with a bath brush, a loofah, a bath mitt, or by using a special abrasive sponge and medicated soap.

Body Odor

It is a fact that everybody sweats. However, there is no need for a woman to smell unless she is careless or just plain uncaring about herself. Sweat only becomes smelly in the areas of the body where fresh air does not circulate easily.

Unit Five – Skin Consultation and Care

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Identify the actions that are detrimental to the appearance of skin
  • Describe the different skin types
  • Identify which products should be used for the different skin types

The skin takes care of itself to a certain extent, producing its own oils and moisture for lubrication. But the sebaceous glands that do this do not always function correctly. They may produce too much sebum (oil) or too little.

Any of the brand names available in the large stores and pharmacists are safe to use, though if you or your clients have a sensitive skin or have suffered from allergies, it is probably wiser to go for the ranges of hypo-allergenic products.

Unit Six – Skin Care

A woman's skin is changing, sloughing-off dead cells and growing new ones, all the time. There is no sense in you or your client wasting money on skin-care products unless they are going to be used regularly. Any beauty therapist should be able to tell at a glance the difference between a cared-for skin and one which has been subjected regularly to the 'hit and miss treatment.’

Unit 7 – Manicure and Pedicure

Despite all, women expect their hands and feet to not only work efficiently but also to look good. This is an area in which a beauty therapist’s knowledge and skills often prove to be invaluable to the client. Beautiful hands are a tremendous advantage. Students and clients with fairly unremarkable faces and figures can have hands that are hypnotically attractive to watch.

Hand Protection

It is not so many years ago that hands were seen as being able to reveal a woman’s social status. A 'lady’s' hands were always soft and white, showing that she did no manual work, and to keep them this way hand care was taken very seriously.

Hand Cleaning

Strange as it may seem, it is possible to forget for days on end actually to clean the hands. They may be washed at odd moments during the day, but this is not the same thing. Often women are so busy cleaning their face, teeth and so on that their hands are left out of the process.

Hand Nourishing

Last thing at night, after having applied the moisturizer or night cream, massage in some hand cream. This should not take long; simply smooth on to the fronts and the backs of the hands, and massage each finger quickly. Always remember to bend the fingers backwards with the other hand and pull each finger gently to keep the joints flexible.

Hand Massage

Following a manicure, and also at night once in a while, it should be ensured that the hands are given a good massage. The following are a set of guidelines that the student would do well to acquaint him or herself with.

Hand Beauty Treatment

Students can give their own, or a client’s hands, a mask to improve the color and texture of the skin, just as they would do with the face. If a commercial brand is to be used, then a nourishing one should always be selected rather than a drying one.

Hand Exercises

Exercising will stimulate the circulation of blood to the hands and encourage nail growth, and will keep the hands supple and flexible. As well as recommending that the fingers are pressed back at night as previously suggested, students can also advocate that hand exercises should be incorporated into a regular exercise regime.

The Nails

The nail plate consists of layers of a hard enamel-like substance, Keratin, which are held together by a small amount of moisture and fats and it takes from 3 to 5 months depending on the individual, for the nail to grow.

Bearing this in mind, it is important for the student to remember that it will also take this length of time for any damage done to the nail while it is being formed in the matrix to grow out, or for students/clients to see any improvement if the nails are being improved using cuticle cream.

The Feet

The majority of problems with the feet will be of the client’s own making, as we said earlier. They are caused by total neglect of the feet, or worse, by squashing the feet, which are highly complex systems of bone and muscle, into too-tight shoes or balancing them on tiny heels. Nowadays, thank heavens, the 'winkle pickers' and high stiletto heels that were once 'de rigeur' have gone the way of many fashion fads. It is not difficult nowadays to find shoes that combine elegance and style with comfort.

Unit Eight – Hair Care

Hair, like nails, is an appendage of the skin and similar in composition to the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. The point from which all hair is nourished and produced is the papilla, situated at the base of the follicle, a tube or pocket of skin, from which the hair emerges.

Growth of Hair

Hair is the most rapidly developing cellular structure in the entire body, with the possible exception of bone marrow. It grows on average about half an inch (1.25 cm) a month, faster in summer than in winter and more at night than in the daytime. Length is determined by the growing cycle. The growing phase, anagen, can last up to six years. Followed by the degenerating phase, catagen, when the hair follicle stops growing and then shrinks.

The main causes of dry and straw like hair are seen as being either natural wear and tear or mechanical damage, and chemical damage.

Let us first give consideration to the actual shape of the face itself, before we even think about making learning how to apply make-up.

Face Shaping

Most students will already appreciate that apart from undergoing plastic surgery, there is relatively little that a woman (or a beauty therapist, for that matter) can do to alter the basic shape and structure of her face and her features.

The General Adaptation Syndrome

Adaptation and Homeostasis form the basic principles of our learning experience whether it is intellectual learning or learning what foods and exercise and hobbies are "good for us". Things we like and make us feel good we tend to repeat, things that are not pleasant we tend to avoid. But where we are unable to assess the inner workings of our body, we are not always that accurate in assessing the benefit of what we do and what we pour into our gullet.

The Essential Nutrients

Your body is composed of molecules made from the food you consume. Your digestive tract produces about 10 liters of enzyme secretions every day to digest part of the 100 tons of food you are likely to consume over your lifetime.

Vitamins

Vitamins are organic nutrients found in foods and are essential in small quantities for both growth and good health. Chemically vitamins are made from of the same elements: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and sometimes nitrogen or cobalt, but their elements are arranged differently and so perform different functions in the body.

Unit 11 – Basic Nutrition

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Identify the importance of mineral and the various foods they can be found in
  • Explain the importance of water to the body
  • Discuss the deficiency of indications of minerals in the diet

Minerals

If we extracted all the minerals out of a human body, they would weigh about 4 or 5 pounds (9 - 11kg). While we need only small amounts of minerals in our diet, they perform critical functions: building of bones and teeth, regulating heartbeat, transporting oxygen from the lungs to tissues, etc.

Micro Minerals

Notes on these will be found right at the end of the course when looking at the RDA's. As the measuring devices used by scientists become more sensitive so will the knowledge on the micronutrients expand. Micro-minerals, which are only just being accepted as essential, e.g. Boron, will be further studied and reported on.

WATER

Without food we can live for weeks. But without water, depending on the temperature, we only would last a few days. Nothing survives without water, and virtually nothing takes place in the body without water playing a vital role.

Unit Twelve- Anti-aging Therapy

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

  • Explain the cross-linking theory of ageing
  • Describe the effect of free radicals
  • Understand the effect of antioxidants
  • Explain how diet can affect the process of ageing

Unit Thirteen – Massage

Principles of massage:

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body using the hands. It is one of the oldest forms of healing known to man. In its simplest form, it is instinctive to all of us to rub the part of the body that is hurting. 'Rubbing it better'.

Unit Fourteen – Sterilization

The learning outcomes of this unit are:

Autoclave

This is the most effective method of sterilization and what is done is that instruments are sterilized at high pressure in an autoclave. A good example of this would be a pressure cooker.

Ultraviolet Rays

These types of rays also sterilize but unfortunately have a very low rate of penetration. The ultraviolet rays are emitted in a cabinet which may be wall mounted or kept on a surface.

Glass Bead Sterilizers

Glass bead sterilizers reach temperature of between one hundred and ninety degrees and three hundred degrees, depending on the model.

Chemical Methods of Sterilization

Concentrated liquid chemical agents are available which have to be diluted for use. Some chemical agents act either as a disinfectant or as a sterilant, depending on the strength of their solution and the time for which items are kept in contact with Some liquid chemical sterilizers are very harmful to the skin and great care is needed when handling them.
