1. Environmental Legislation and Policy: Learn to evaluate your organisation's environmental policy
As the public and scientific outcry over environmental pollution has intensified over the years, politicians have responded by creating more legislation designed to protect the environment. This legislation has been aimed largely at business and industry.
This course on Environmental Legislation and Policy presents an overview of the most relevant environmental legislation that you need to be informed about before writing or evaluating your organisation's environmental policy. It provides you with an overview of the development of statutory environmental law in the UK, and concludes with examining the rationale behind environmental policy development, what a policy should contain and how it should be communicated.
2. Ecology: Learn the relationship between plants and animals
Ecology is the study of the relationship between plants and animals and their physical and biological environment. The field of ecology is a distinct scientific discipline, it does contribute to the study and understanding of environmental problems.
Our Ecology course will provide a detailed explanation on many aspects of the eco balance in an easy to understand format and help you to understand how all parts of the environment work together.
3. Environmental Improvements: Learn to formulate a plan to fulfill your organisation's environmental policy
Making Environmental Improvements is a course designed to help you formulate a plan to fulfil your organisation's environmental policy. It is one thing to create an environmental policy, but something altogether different to see it come to fruition.
This course will guide you through the process of planning and monitoring activities to achieve the objectives and targets based on the aims of your policy. Among the many topics covered will be potential obstacles and methods of overcoming them, record keeping and documentation, communication and training, as well as methods of monitoring your programme
4. Environmental Aspects and Impacts: Learn to improve your organisation's environmental performance
The Environmental Aspects and Impacts course is intended to help you guide your organisation towards a strategy that will improve its overall environmental performance and comply with recent environmental legislation.
This course takes you through the first steps in introducing an environmental management system into your organisation. In order to accomplish this, you will explore in detail both local and global environmental issues, and how your company can reduce its contribution to these problems.
You will learn to identify those activities, products and services that can have an impact on the environment, evaluate the significance of those impacts, conduct an environmental review and to write a report of your findings.
5. Environmental Auditing and Reporting: Learn to apply different types of environmental audit
The first session introduces you to the different types of environmental audit, what they aim to achieve, and how they differ from similar activities such as reviews and inspections. It goes on to discuss the benefits and disadvantages of auditing in more detail.
Session Two explores the preparation work that must be carried out by you as a manager responsible for initiating audits (that is, the client). Client responsibilities and activities are listed in paragraph 4.2.4 of ISO 14011. The session begins by discussing the selection of auditors, including making a decision on whether to use members of staff or external auditors. It then considers the importance of reaching agreement with the auditor about the objectives and scope of the audit.
Session Three discusses the activities that the lead auditor must undertake in preparation for the audit. They include the collection of relevant documents, the compilation of checklists of questions, and the drawing up of an audit specification. Depending on the size of your organisation, you may be required to take on the role of lead auditor. Even if this is not the case, as an environmental manager you will need to know what is involved in planning an audit so that you can give the necessary support and assistance to the lead auditor.
Session Four offers guidance on carrying out the audit, including the opening meeting and the methods you, in the role of auditor, should employ when interviewing, making observations and note-taking.
Session Five explores methods available to evaluate the audit findings and present them to the management of the organisation. It discusses both oral reporting, as in the closing meeting, and written reporting, as in the audit report.
Organisations are finding that communicating with their stakeholders about environmental performance is becoming increasingly important as more people and organisations become interested in the environment. This sixth session looks at the different types of environmental reports available, the reasoning behind publishing them, what they should contain and how they should be compiled to suit different audiences.
6. Environmental Management: Learn how to manage and protect our environment
Many economic structures depend on natural resources. Industries like forestry, fishing, agriculture and tourism rely on the health function of the natural environment, and hardly a productive industry does not rely on natural resources. The industries will suffer if this resource base is damaged in any way.
Learning about the environment, what we can do and what it can do for us is an essential part of your life, if we want to ensure our future existence. How we manage our environment and what we need to do to protect it is an essential part of this specialised course.
7. Business and the Environment: Learn the principles underlying environmental management
In 1990 the concept of the environmental management system (EMS) was new to many organisations. However, it has subsequently developed very rapidly, becoming the subject of a number of international standards and schemes. The first national environmental management standard, BS7750, was published in 1992 and the European Union (or Community as it was then called) adopted the same basic approach in 1993 with the introduction of its Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). An international standard, ISO 14001, replaced BS 7750 in 1996. In this course we look at how these standards and schemes have developed, the differences between them, and what benefits an organisation can expect to gain from adopting a recognised EMS.
While neither ISO 14001 nor EMAS prescribe the level of environmental performance to be achieved, they do require a commitment to continual improvement. The extent of this improvement is for the individual organisation to decide and should be quantified in objectives and targets where practicable. At first glance, continual improvement may appear to be a particularly onerous commitment, but it is vital if the environmental management system is to be seen as credible by interested parties. This course looks at the importance and benefits of continual improvement, how it can be achieved, and how some of the barriers to its achievement can be overcome.
Any organisation undertaking a programme of continual improvement needs not only to establish procedures for its work processes but also to regard all procedures, and the processes to which they relate, as being capable of improvement. This course focuses on what is involved in improving work procedures and processes in order to reduce the environmental impacts of your organisation.
A sudden environmental crisis - such as a large fire, explosion, release of toxic gas or major water pollution incident - is probably the most feared occurrence by individuals with responsibility for an organisation's environmental performance. However, slow-acting pollution incidents can create a crisis that damages not only the environment but also the organisation, both financially and in terms of its reputation - and the reputation of its products - among the public.
Emergency planning is required to deal with any incident that could result in loss of life, ill health or damage to the environment.
8. Eco Building Design: Learn to establish a balance between technology, culture and biology
Building biology, bio-house design, biological architecture and ecological building all refer to the construction of a building along lines of more natural, renewable resources and health of the occupants. In other words buildings become more people-friendly. It aims to establish a balance between technology, culture and biology.
Ensuring a building is constructed to meet the environmental needs of the area takes not only construction knowledge, but also skills in the art of eco-design. This course goes a long way to help provide these added skills and knowledge.
9. Mushroom Growing: Learn how to grow mushrooms effectiviely
Over the past 30 years the popularity and consumption of mushrooms has expanded in leaps and bounds worldwide. Mushrooms are relatively easy to grow, and with the advent of a range of home growing kits, the home mushroom farm has become a reality for many a home gardener.
This course has been written to teach mushroom growing in a way which will be relevant to any country. It puts aside regional techniques and tries to teach you principles and concepts which can be applied to anywhere. This course also teaches you the principles and not just black and white facts.
10. Farm Machinery Care: Learn to maintain machinery used on most farms
